An Open Letter to a Face Book, Friend:

At first, I was not going to respond to your recent comment, but I just could not ignore the issue you attempted to make by implication. I do want to thank you for this “teaching moment” that will allow me to address your comment and hopefully enlighten someone. For this reason, you shall remain anonymous! Let me say from the start, I do not believe you are a racist when you said that “you people are just voting for Obama because he is black!”  However, I do believe that racism is alive and well in our United States of America, and you and I daily bare its effects and intrusion into our lives. I believe you are just as much a victim of racism’s misinformation as Black Americans are of its bigotry. There is so much misinformation about people of color in general and President Obama in particular. I believe you are just a misinformed individual!

I think my friend if you would set aside your presuppositions about both, and look with an inquiring fair mind; you will find things are not as you have been led to believe. You will find that Black Americans have the same concerns about our country and our families’ welfare as any other American ethnic group. You will find that we are among the most loyal and patriotic supporters of our country. We have bravely served in each and every war. We are the first to give our lives in the defense of America from her enemies, since the inception of the 13 colonies. Although we come home from these wars wounded, broken and torn, to face still racial discrimination and hatred, we still volunteer to enlist. We have always had to fight on two fronts. While fighting in foreign countries, we are still fighting in America to be respected and treated equally under the flag we fought and died to protect.

It is ironic that as black soldiers fighting for America, there was a time when the armed forces were segregated because of racism. However, we could die on the battlefield, side by side with those same soldiers who held racist opinions of us. There is an old Native American idiom that wisely says, “Before judging someone, walk a mile in their moccasins.” We have revised it to say “Walk a mile in my shoes.” However you say it, its meaning is clearly the same. “Walk a mile in my shoes” and you will know how it feels to be me!  Be in my place, be in my position, be in my situation and see how it is with me! Then you will know what it’s like for me! In short, put yourself into someone else’s position, before judging them! I cannot help but feel if we all followed this advice, we would not have the problems of getting along with one another, we have today! I wish everyone could really study our history and walk a mile in the shoes of average Black Americans.

I have to assume that you are not of Black American origins, or else you would not have made the statement that you made. You think you have us all figured out, but you really don’t have a clue. By you not being a person of color, you will most likely never fully understand why Black Americans would vote for a candidate because of his race. Let me see if I can enlighten you a little on the subject. Now, I won’t pretend to speak for all Black Americans. However,  I can give you a consensus of how people in my circle of influence feel to a greater or lesser degree about your comment. Just so you know, my own family has members from many nationalities. Racism is not a part of our family structure! The overall consensus of those whom I shared your comment with is that, A) Your statement smells of racism. And B) You don’t know enough about Black Americans to be making such a general, dogmatic statement!

Now for me personally as an individual, your statement does have some merit! If I had to look at my voting in the last two elections for President; in terms of percentages; I would say that I voted my conscience 70/30 for Barack Obama. Yes, I voted for him 70% because I felt he was the best and most qualified person to lead this country; out of all the candidates running. And yes, I voted for him 30% because of his ethnicity and because I felt it was about time for change!   For the first time in my history of voting, I could see that my vote was going to count for something! I no longer felt disenfranchised! My little individual vote was going to make a difference. My vote would be a part of making history in America and the world. Believe me, Black Americans are not stupid! Barack Obama would not have gotten our vote, if he was just another “run of the mill” candidate! Everyone saw something different in him! We saw something special! We saw Hope and Change!

You see my friend, your people have never been in a situation where they where slaves of another race of people in recent history. Your people have never been kidnapped from their homeland; sold into slavery and accorded the worst treatment any human could put upon another human being. Your people have never been totally stripped of their cultural identity, language, mores and religion; then forced to adapt to the culture of another race. Have your people ever been considered as the chattel property of another; to be sold, beaten, raped and murdered at will, by people professing to be Christians?  My people have! Have your people been lynched, burned alive, drugged by a car until the head separated from the body?  My people have! Have your people had their homes and churches bombed and set afire in effort to intimidate them? My people have! Have they had to look in the face of hatred from a mob of hundreds, knowing they were going to be horribly murdered at any moment? I don't think so!

Your people have never been bred like live stock to their own fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, to produce more slaves. Have your people been forced to stand by and watch their women be raped; their men be killed in horrible ways, just for the sport of it? My people have? Your people have never been denied their civil rights or for that matter, human rights. Have your people had to endure being fire hosed and attacked by police dogs, because they were demonstrating for civil rights? My people have!  Your people have never had to face uniform racial discrimination in every aspect of their lives; or live in ghetto environments; or watch police randomly kill your people for no good reason. My people have! This is the way Black Americans have had to experience life in America, for many hundreds of years. This is the Black Experience!

If your people had experienced any of these things, you would have a totally different appreciation for human life and the right to vote. You would understand what a genuine joy it is to see someone of your race; who has survived all of this, rise to the highest office of the land.  You would know what it is to feel that overwhelming since of pride bring water to your eyes; every time you witness him leading and moving in the circles of government and world affairs. If you could only “walk a mile in our shoes,” you would want to honor the sacrifice of people who willingly gave their lives, so that we could enjoy the privilege of voting today. You would understand what a privilege and honor it is to vote for a Black Man in this day and time!

Yes, you would vote the collective will of your people, to help one of their race achieve success, in a world where everything has been purposely stacked against them. Your heart and mind would lead you to cast a vote for one of your people and make a difference in the lives millions who view this as true change. You must remember, in the last election and this election, President Obama was not elected solely on the votes of Black Americans. Had he relied solely on the Black vote, he probably would not have won election, in either primary. He was elected in both primaries by Americans of all shades, religions and nationalities! This was  democracy in action; producing a mandate that reflected the "expressed will of the people." Please join me in prayer for cooperation and respect by all parties of government; and this next four years will move us FORWARD to bring about a truly United States of America. We are all in this TOGETHER and I am still. . . . .

COMMENTS ON: YOUR BLACK WORLD - Yvette Carnell: Let’s Talk About G.Dep Snitchin’ On Himself And Going to Jail for 15 Years

Your Black World Featured Article, May 15, 2012

I read Ms. Yvette Carnell's article with interest as it pointed to an all too familiar pattern we have witnessed since the birth of Hip Hop,…. Bad Boy Rappers! Our young people are following a script that very often leads to death and prison, in an attempt to acquire a reputation for being a “Gangster or Bad Boy.” They erroneously believe this is needed to launch a successful career as a “Rapper.” Yes, there have been a few who have succeeded from this scenario. However most of those were “pretend and want to be, gangsters.”  I feel sad that this young man allowed his environment to shape him into a criminal in the first place. I feel even sadder for the victim’s family and the victim, whose life he took in his effort to “Get Mine.” Ms. Carnell appears to speak from her background as a former campaign staffer on Capitol Hill; where the concepts of “a conscience, morality and God,” do not seem to exist, from the record of politicians. She has expressed the politician’s view of, “as long as you can show you did some “good” things; you are redeemed from your criminal, immoral, despicable and corrupt conduct, while in office.”

Ms. Carnell overlooks the fact that a man’s life was taken and Rapper G. Dep is responsible for it, by his own admission! Regardless of his reason for confessing to this two decades old crime, at least the victim’s family now has closure! The murder of their loved one is no longer a cold case, with no one being held accountable. I feel Ms. Carnell’s sympathy was badly misplaced when she said  What’s even sadder, though, is that he’s now abandoning his kids out of some misplaced sense of redemption, or, as he says, as a way of “making it right”. And then followed up this asinine statement with one equally as tactless, “Going to prison, and wading through the psychological impact of what happens there, and what he will see and be forced to do there, won’t help his wife or his twin sons. Not having any income, and forcing his wife to bear the burden of rearing and providing for two boys alone, doesn’t help society or G. Dep one bit.
Where is the concern for the man who was murdered?  He may have been on his way home to his wife and six children, when this punk chose to mug him and take his life, for what moneys he had!  This crime occurring two decades ago does not negate G. Dep’s responsibility! There is no statute of limitations on murder! Have you not heard of “The long arm of the Law?” It means, “The Law will catch you no matter how long it takes or how far you travel.” You must also consider the possibility that the “victim’s wife” had the burden of rearing and providing for her children alone; and that she and her children had to endure the pain of, as you say, G. Dep’s “vile and knee-jerk reaction to a toxic system.”; and grow up without the love, support, companionship and guidance of a husband and father!

She ended her article by stating her regret, “It was up to G. Dep to show compassion on himself, to forgive himself, and not turn his life over to the courts in the first place.  I wish he’d made that decision instead of the one he made.”   I wish he had made the decision to live a law abiding life and not rob and kill! Most laws require a penalty or punishment to be exacted for anyone’s violation of them. Total exoneration for an offense is rare. Doing “the right thing”, very often requires a price to be paid also! I believe G. Dep made the correct decision in confessing and accepting the just punishment for his crime! It was the right decision for himself, his family and most importantly for the family of his victim.  After all, G. Dep enjoyed two decades of freedom; a successful career; popularity, wealth and the love and companionship of a wife. He was able to watch his children growing up and participate in all the activities and celebrations that families customarily do. His victim was not afforded these blessings and liberties! G.Dep will leave prison after serving his time and resume his life with family and very possibly have an even more successful career, as a result of this experience! His victim is dead and will not resume his life! He will not have a second chance to be with his wife and children. He will not enjoy the fruits of his labor and the rewards family life.

It is my hope and trusts that G. Dep’s confession to this crime and accepting its punishment is the result of his personal confession of sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ! For it is only in Christ that he will truly find compassion, not given by the courts; redemption, not given by punishment; forgiveness, not given by humans and rebirth as a new man, not of himself!

A Disturbed Christian Believer!

I found myself disturbed earlier today as a result of a post I received on FB. The post reported on a video and news story of a young Christian Convert from Islam who was murdered by Muslims in a most heinous way. I could not watch the video of this young believer in Christ, being held down and having his head cut off with a knife while he was alive. Reading the story was difficult enough, with its graphic description of the event.  I have not been able to get this story out of my mind and the plight of countless other believers, who will face similar or worst treatment at the hands of Muslims. After spending some time in prayer, I feel emotionally better for the moment and I feel the need to write or even vent about my concerns.
I am having conflicting feelings about this! I am feeling sorrow, sadness, horror, compassion, and anger over this atrocious act. At the same time I am feeling relief and a kind of thankfulness that it was not happening to me or Christians in the United States. I feel truly hypocritical right now! I imagine it is the “self preservation” gene making its impress on my thoughts. However, in all of this, the thought occurred to me that these believers are true Christians! They put it all on the line for Christ. They believed Jesus and are living Christianity inside Islamic and Atheistic dominated countries; where they live daily with the threat of being killed for their Faith. How brave they are!
By contrast, we who are Christians in America offer up a lot of lip service; live a soft, undemanding, open life of faith. Our faith is rarely, if ever, challenged and tested. We are never faced with a life or death decision concerning our beliefs and faith. We have in the past and it still occurs today, suffered discriminations of some sort for being Christian. However, discrimination for us is more of an annoyance: a inconvenience that does not rise to the level of martyrdom.  In this Sunday’s sermon, my Pastor, William E. Tyler, of Antioch MBC, emphasized the point that, as Christians “we often deny Christ by our inactions!” We are given daily opportunities to “share our faith” with others, and we fail to rise to the occasion. We fail to fulfill our call, duty and commission to “reach the unsaved!” We are effectively denying Christ and the Christian Faith we claim to believe in! Then on the heels of his sermon, I come home to read of this brave believer’s martyrdom and I’m moved to tears.
I cannot tell if my tears are for the loss of him and other Christians facing the same fate; or for the sorry state we find ourselves as Christians in America today! How have we become so lax in our duties to our God, Faith and one another?  We have experienced clear proofs of God’s Unconditional Love and Power in our individual and collective lives. He has truly brought us from a mighty long way. Many of us have been so far down in the muck and mire of this society; we were without hope of rising above our sinful nature and conditions.  Then someone shared their faith with us! Someone prayed for us! A seed was planted in our minds and God nourished it until one day we were strong enough to accept Christ and our lives were changed forever by God’s gift of Grace. Christ worked a real miracle in my life and others lives! Cleaning us up and making us acceptable to the Father. We are now charged to share that miracle experience, so that it can duplicate the work in the life of someone else.
You and I are should be proof enough to any non-believers that God is truly real! Who else could take filthy sinners and wash them clean, to live new lives as lights to a darkened world?  Who else could give this young man peace and assurance to calmly face having his head cut off, when all he had to do to save his life was denounce Christ and Christianity?  He found his salvation in Christ Jesus and not Muhammad! The Gospel of Mark 8:35 says, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” This young Christian found the same Faith that allowed the early Christians to face persecution and death by wild animals in the coliseum, for the enjoyment of pagans. He found the same Faith that allowed the Disciples of Christ, to face their martyrdom for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ! (Sharing their faith!)  Could this be an example of “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding”, promised in Philippians 4:7. We probably won’t understand it until we are faced with similar circumstances. Only God can give you that assurance of peace in faith, where a believer will give up his life rather than deny Jesus Christ in apostasy.
Here we fat Christians sit in our finery! Fine homes and automobiles! Fat in material wealth; Fat in our body temples; Fat in our self righteousness; Fat in our egos and false pride! Yes, we are indeed FAT! Enjoying the freedoms of speech, travel, religion and worship; while in countries like China, Russia, Korea, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and parts of Africa; Christians are being persecuted and killed for the same beliefs that we claim. None are spared from martyrdom! Men, Women and children are viciously killed for professing Christ; possessing a bible or page from a bible; or reciting a passage where someone could hear it.  Hiding and meeting in secret to worship together; knowing at any time, they could be imprisoned, tortured and killed, for doing so. And here we are in America, taking our freedoms for granted! I would venture to say that the “average” Christian has no idea of the sufferings of other Christians for their Faith.
In my youth, I was incarcerated in an L. A. County Probation Forestry Camp. We were assigned to work in the foothills of Los Angeles; fighting forest fires, clearing brush, cutting trails and planting trees. It was hard, tedious work in the hot sun.  Everyone on the crew sought to do as little as possible in fulfilling the day’s quota of work. We called this effort “playing the part!” We would go through the motions of working and to the supervisor watching, it would appear we were working hard. However, we only accomplished a fraction of the work we were supposed to achieve.  We would jokingly say of one another “So n’ so, is playing the part!” So the next day, we would be back at the same place, doing the same thing, with the same results. I think we Christians in America are doing the same thing! Playing the part! Going through the motions of practicing Christianity; appearing to those watching, that we are righteous and giving service, but accomplishing little of either!
I believe that we have lost sight of what the Church and Body of Christ was in the past and how it is supposed to function today! We have become very comfortable “playing the part!” It is a sad commentary on our Faith that Christians are so divided!  According to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity (CSGC) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, there are upwards of over 30,000 Christian Denominations. Can you imagine how Jesus Christ’s one, simple gospel became fractured into 30,000 different gospels! Remember what Jesus said in Mark 3:25, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand!”  How long will God allow this house to stand like this? How are we to grow in our Faith when we cannot agree even on basic doctrine and worship together? We have divided ourselves in our theology, but God says He is ONE! We have divided ourselves along racial and cultural lines; but God says we are ONE PEOPLE! We have divided ourselves in religions, but Jesus gave mankind “The WAY! Don’t you think it is time for us Christians to re-asses what we are doing and just who it is we are following?
I say to you truly, you must read God’s word for YOURSELF and allow it to lead you back to the Faith taught by Jesus and His Apostles. The Faith that will cause you to be active and committed to fulfilling God’s Will and Purpose in your life. Each of us has gifts that can be used in kingdom building! Each of us has a task that we can accomplish for the Lord and the cause of Christianity! Are you going to sit contently by, enjoying a weekly feel good sermon; or are you ready to get up and truly be a part of the body of Christ? Can you continue to sit comfortably by and unconcerned, while our brothers and sisters in Christ are dying for the cause of Christianity? Does not your heart say there must be something we can do? Why can’t Christians march on Washington and demand our government do something to stop this? Why can’t Christians demonstrate in front of Muslim Mosque and demand that they stop the killing of Christians?
You let a Muslim be killed here unjustly and see how fast America’s streets are filled up with Muslims decrying the injustice! See how in an instant there will be demonstrations against America in every Muslim country! Don’t tell me that junk about “it is not all of the Muslims, it is just the extremists! I know friends who are Muslims and they aren’t like that!” Yeah! Right!  You had better examine how the extremists are funded from these Mosque and other Muslim organizations in America!  We so-called Christians sit back and watch Christians die like dogs, and never say a mumbling word. Too afraid of offending the Muslims. Scared not to be politically correct about what we say! Don’t you think it is time for Christians to stand up and defend our Faith and our believers as they do? And yes, I expect to receive some flack and criticisms from some of you blind Christians, and misguided American Muslims! Bring it on! Maybe this will be the dialogue it will take to wake up these complacent, sleeping Christians!
The Muslim extremists who believe in Islam are determined to destroy America and Christianity! There statements and actions are proof of this! This is common knowledge! Their desire is to kill all Christians who will not denounce Christ and accept Islam. They are bound by their Book to do so! Most of you Christians are acting like this is some fairy tale! You had better wake up to reality! Don’t think that the U.S. Government and the Politics of America can’t change that drastically! Egypt just elected an extremist from the Muslim Brotherhood as its leader!  When he institutes Sharia Law in Egypt, you will understand! A country that used to be an ally to the U.S. will now be considered a threat! It has the potential of becoming the largest stronghold for terrorist in the world.
What do all these terrorist groups have in common?....The religion of Islam and its dedication to the extinction of all other religions but Islam. These people are willing and eager to die for their beliefs and God. We so called Christians won’t even speak up for our beliefs and God! They will strap on explosives in an effort to defeat us and make change. We won’t march in the streets or write a letter in order to protect Christians and our way of life! Christians could at anytime be faced with the same decision this new convert to Christ was faced with, right here in America. What will you do?  Don’t be too comfortable! Remember how God allowed Israel’s enemies to capture them and destroy their city and temple because of Israel’s disobedience. Don’t think this cannot happen in America today! The same God back then….is the same God today!

The American Flag - Flag Day!

FLAG DAY, TODAY!

I just finished reading through a few post, as I have been busy and unable to get on FB for a few days or more. Today is Flag Day and I noticed no one commented on this fact. It has been obvious if you have been out and about at all today! One thing that chaps my hide about our great country is the lack of respect so-called Americans have for the Flag of our Nation. I get totally peeved when I see people flying flags of other countries from their cars and homes.
We are the only country that puts up with this disrespect! You can’t take your American flag to other countries and wave it unless that country is hosting and sponsoring an American dignitary or a special American event. After the particulars are over, your flag has to go! You won’t see any other flag but the flag of that country. But here we see flags from all over, waving and proclaiming the nationality and citizenship of its owners. There should be an enforceable law prohibiting flying another countries flag except in an official capacity.
This is the United States of America! Not Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Korea, Japan, England, France or Germany! If this is where your loyalties rest with those countries and their governments; then perhaps you would be happier being there, where you can proudly fly your flag, in your country. If your countries are so great and better than America, why are you’re here? It is assumed you came to America to become part of this nation. Love your culture from where you came, but don’t disrespect our country and flag, by waving another over it!
American soldiers of all nationalities are dying for this country and its freedom every day! Back in the 1960’s there were bumper stickers that expressed a feeling that needs to be rekindled in the hearts and minds of us all; “AMERICA, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!”

A STUDY IN FORGIVENESS (REVISIED)

As human beings we often say and do things to one another, that in our heart of hearts, we truly did not mean and at some point, we truly r...
